A research team led by Professor Liu Zhensheng from Northeast Forestry University has revealed that at least 6,960 common cranes have overwintered in Shizuishan, Ningxia, from October 2024 to March 2025.

This figure represents an approximate 130-fold increase compared to the first recorded observations a decade ago.

"The common crane, a large wading bird, serves as an indicator of environmental changes. Their significant presence in the city is a testament to the recent improvements in the local ecosystem," said Zhang Xu, a member of the research team.

Common cranes are classified as a second-class protected species in China. In 2014, local photographer Yue Changhong captured the first images of about 50 cranes. "Since then, each winter has seen a growing number of cranes, sparking interest and conservation efforts among photographers and residents," Yue said.

The research confirmed that the cranes arrive in early October, with numbers increasing until stabilizing in December. They then begin their northward migration in March. "The cranes primarily feed on rice and grass seeds scattered in fields. The banks of the Yellow River in Shizuishan provide ample food resources," Zhang said.

Shizuishan serves as a crucial stopover and transit point for migratory birds. The city has been enhancing its ecological zones, systems, corridors, and riverine and lakeside areas, resulting in improved environmental quality and increasing numbers of migratory bird populations.
