Northwest China's Ningxia Hui autonomous region and Hunan province will step up construction of an ultra-high voltage direct current power transmission project that links the two provinces, according to an economic cooperation forum held on Saturday.

The two provinces will also reinforce cooperation in the fields of manufacturing and energy to take advantage of renewable energy resources in the country.

As one of nine major cross-province power transmission projects during the 14th Five-Year-Plan period, the project will drive the development of 13 million kilowatts of new energy in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region.

After completion of the project, the annual clean energy power transmission capacity will reach 20 billion kilowatts, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 16 million tons and substantially contribute to the country's goals to achieve carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

The National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration have come up with a blueprint on the country's large-scale solar and wind power project bases focusing on the Gobi Desert and other sandy and rocky regions in the country.

China plans to optimize its energy mix by building massive wind and solar power facilities in the country's Gobi Desert and other arid areas.

The country will ensure it meets its carbon neutrality target through clean, advanced coal power and ultra-high voltage power transmission projects.
